Downloads: Worst of the worst

Every three months, one of us gets the thankless task of calling out the most disastrous downloads of the season. This is no easy assignment. It requires hours sifting through title after title of terrible software, assiduously testing each one, until at last, exhausted from the toil, eyes twitching at the lunacy of poorly conceptualized or poorly acquitted software, we narrow our sights on the dreaded infamous five. Summer has had its share of clunkers, which Senior Associate Editor Seth Rosenblatt now offers up for your personal amusement--and lingering aversion. Without further ado, here are the Top 5 worst downloads of summer 2009.

On the flipside of applications gone wrong is a preview of one very important software package gone right. Last week, Microsoft finalized the Windows 7 code, declaring it RTM (ready-to-manufacture) and passing it along for, you know, manufacturing. For all intents and purposes, the overhaul to Microsoft's newest operating system is done. It just won't be available for some months while it's being loaded onto new computers, packaged onto CDs, and otherwise prepped for fanfare and release. Until then, we take a look at the finalized build, sharing exactly what we think.

Just because Windows 7 is on its way doesn't mean you should overlook the operating system you're laboring with now. Protect it with this collection of top free security apps for Windows Vista and XP.
